2006 VACATION, October 2006

50% MARSH + 50% HUGHBANKS=100% SILLINESS

Hey Everybody! We are one our way! We are just getting ready to go eat breakfast here. We hope to be in Sioux Falls before Noon today!

Last night we drove past the Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City. At night it was all lit up and it looked really really tall!!

Maddy - "I SEE it Daddy I SEE it!"

Jami - "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.......ZZZZZZZZZZZZ".

Maybe Brother will see it on the way back! It is where Sergeant Charles Floyd was buried in 1804 on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

THURSDAY

We headed to Elk Point, South Dakota to Edgar's Old Fashioned Soda Fountain. It's been there for 100 years!!

Daddy - "I'll bet they have Coke there."

Maddy - "Yeah. Maybe we can get CoCo-Cola at the soda fountain."

Jami - "Can you drink out of it?"

Mommy - "What?"

Jami - "The soda fountain. Can you drink out of it?"

Mommy - "It's not that kind of fountain, Buddy."

Daddy made us stand outside for this picture. We were freezing!

While Mommy looked at the antiques and breakables, we had to hold Daddy's hand so we didn't touch anything. Mom bought Grandpa Mike a Christmas present, but she said if we tell him what it is, she'll box our ears. (We don't even know what that means!)

When we FINALLY got to sit down at the counter, the lady gave us soda jerk hats.

Maddy - "Has Grandpa-pa-pa been here before?"

Here we are in our soda jerk hats. (It's not a naughty word! Really!)

We even got to pick something off the menu, so we got a chocolate cola phosphate and a vanilla ice cream cone. Yummy!

We left Edgar's with our Whirlypop and Baseball Bat taffy sticks and Grandpa Mike's secret Christmas present. We're headed for Sioux Falls now, and there's even snow on the ground! Boy, is it windy! Keep it on the road, Dad!

Here we are in front of the Falls of the Sioux River. It's really cold.

Can you see the snot dripping from our noses? We rode the trolley and it was really fun!

We went to the Courthouse Museum and saw lots of cool stuff, even a baseball from the Hall of Fame in New York that was signed by Babe Ruth! Daddy was in heaven! We got to pose behind some catcher's gear and we look like big leaguers, don't we? We'll 'catch' you later!

Pizza on the bed and to the pool we go! Whoo-yeah!

CHECK BACK TOMORROW!!

WE WILL UPDATE!!

WE'LL CALL YOU GRANDPARENTS SOON!

Our trip to De Smet started with a visit to the Ingalls Family Homestead. It was a long drive from Sioux Falls, and a REALLY windy one, but we made it! We had to stop and buy new hats and gloves!

We started at the Visitor Center and the lady taught us how to make rope. She even let us make our own jumpropes!

The first building we saw told us all about Laura's travels and where she lived when she was a little girl. We couldn't believe that she was a real person!

We got to sit in a covered wagon just like Laura and her sisters rode in when Pa moved their family west. It was pretty small!

Pa Jami and Ma Maddy forging their way into the wild frontier

When we got to the barn, we found a real stagecoach! It was fun to sit inside and see how it must have felt to go on a trip. We're glad we got to travel in a van and not inside a dusty, cold stagecoach!

It was fun to see all the old tools and machines that Pa had to use on his homestead. Grandpa-pa-pa's wheelbarrow is a lot easier to push!

Laura and her family sure had a lot of room to run. Their land was big and flat, but SOOO WINDY!!!!!
We had a great time learning all about Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family. We hope to come back to De Smet sometime soon so we can learn more about them!

After we finished at the Ingalls Homestead, we headed back to our hotel to rest and get ready for a nice supper. Some of us just couldn't stay awake another minute...

The lady at the hotel said that "Glenda" at the Kingsbury County Country Club was the best cook in town, so we headed out to Countryview for some prime rib and rack of pork. Daddy was so disappointed when we got there and the waitress told him they were all out of rack of pork. He almost cried. But then...

Another waitress came and told him that they had ONE left! We've never seen Daddy so happy before! Mommy got prime rib, even though Daddy told her not to. He said since she didn't like steak, why on earth would she order prime rib? But she did it anyway, and she ate every last bite. Guess Mommy likes steak after all!

Supper was great and we were stuffed, so we went back to the hotel to relax. Daddy stopped at the corner store for some popcorn and M&Ms, and we watched a "Little House on the Prairie" movie from the hotel's movie library. We just couldn't get enough of Laura!

The next morning, we went to the De Smet Cemetary to visit the graves of Pa, Ma, Mary, Carrie, and Laura & Almanzo's baby boy. It was kind of cool to see that they were real people who really lived.

Now we're off to Sioux Falls to a new hotel and a new swimming pool, but first a stop to Buffalo Ridge, a real cowboy ghost town.

When we first got there, we had to walk up a hill to the town. Daddy got scared of the ghosts. We told him that ghosts weren't real, but he started to cry. He's so silly!

We got to see the dentist's and doctor's office, the telegraph office and post office, a saloon, opera house, and the sheriff's office with a jail! Daddy said Jami would have to stay in the jail tonight if he didn't shape up, but that didn't seem to scare Jami. They even had a hangman's noose where people really hanged! In the saloon, we got to see how Wild Bill Hickock was shot while he was playing cards. Legend says that he was holding aces and 8s, and that is why it's called "The Deadman's Hand".

The ghost town was pretty cool, but we're getting hungry! Back to Sioux Falls we go!

Our hotel in Sioux Falls is awesome! It has a dining room! We think it's the coolest hotel we ever stayed in! Mom says that funny, because it's also one of the cheapest hotels we ever stayed in!

Here we are swimming in the pool...

We'll talk to you soon! Be home tomorrow!
